Students in Mizoram are getting worried and anxious regarding the long delay in the scholarship for scheduled tribe students. According to sources, the Central government has reported that an amount of Rs. 1,67,85,797 has already been sanctioned and transferred to the state government of Mizoram on May 8, 2020 as Pre-matric scholarship to Scheduled Tribe students for Mizoram 2020-2021.

Along with this, Rs. 34,46,82,000/- has also been transferred from the Central to the State government on the same date. On October 21, 2021 the Central government announced the sanction of Rs. 4,32,37,717/-  as Pre- Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe Students of Mizoram for the financial year 2021-2022.

Many students have posted strong condemnation against the two biggest students’ organization in the state- Mizo Students’ Union and Mizo Zirlai Pawl regarding their silence and inaction in the scholarship matter. According to other media sources, 25% of the students in Mizoram have received the scholarship while 17,970 students are still patiently waiting for their rightful share. Today,  Dr P.L. Ramliana, the Secretary of Mizoram Scholarship Board made an official statement regarding the delay in Post-Matric Scholarship stating that the Central Government has not released the remaining scholarship for 17,970 students. He also added that Higher & Technical Education Minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana has made a request to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to release the pending scholarship.

It is understandable that with the pandemic, almost all the states in India would be facing financial problem and Mizoram is no exception. But the students’ scholarship has been on hold since last year and the voices of frustrated students are getting louder day by day. Many are aware of the reports about the money having already been transferred to the state government and students are asking where the scholarship money has gone.
