After the border clash between Assam and Mizoram, Assam continues to block National Highway- 306, the lifeline of Mizoram linking the state with the rest of the country.  A week ago, the Home Secretary of Mizoram has filed a complaint to the Central Government regarding the economic blockade imposed by Assam. As the Home Secretary’s request failed to receive practical response, Mizoram Bar Association (MBA) has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) at Guwahati High Court, Aizawl Bench on Tuesday in pursuance of Assam’s refusal to remove the economic blockade which has left many supplies stranded including medical supplies for Covid-19 treatment.

The MBA issued a press statement stating that the PIL has been filed to solve “the hardship faced by the people of Mizoram.” The MBA president Anil Rinliana Malhotra said that the economic blockade is an outright violation of basic fundamental right to life as guaranteed by the constitution of the country. In the letter of complaint sent to the Central Government, the state Home Secretary also stated that Assam do not have the right to block the National Highway which is an infringement of the property of the Central government. Arrangements have been made to get supplies into Mizoram from an alternative route through Tripura.
