NDA Presidential candidate Smt. Draupadi Murmu arrived at Lengpui Airport for a short visit to Mizoram this morning.
Murmu, a former Governor of Jharkhand, was received by Chief Minister Zoramthanga and other state officials at the Airport. She was then accorded a welcome ceremony at Aijal Club with artistes performing traditional dances and music.
She then sat with Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati at Raj Bhawan for an interactive session where she expressed her delight with the natural beauty and the climate of Mizoram. The presidential candidate is accompanied by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways and AYUSH Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs and Irrigation Shri Ashok Singhal BJP MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy and BJP National Spokesperson Dr. Sambhit Patra at the interaction.
The visit is part of the presidential candidate's election campaign. She has visited several Northeast states including Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura where she met different political parties of the states seeking their support for her candidature.
BJP President JP Nadda said around 20 names were discussed for potential candidates and it was decided to have a candidate from the eastern part of the country. He said the consideration was also to have a woman and a tribal as candidate.
If elected, the 64-year-old leader from Odisha will be the first tribal and the second woman to become the President of India.
