After the violent encounter between Assam Police and unarmed civilians at Vairengte, Mizoram, the two neighbouring states have released official press statements where they present clashing statements regarding the chain of events that took place on 26 July, 2021 at Vairengte. Lalchamliana, Home Minister of Mizoram issued a 9 point press statement on behalf of the Government of Mizoram where he presents the development of the unfortunate chain of events at Vairengte, stating that the incident "started with the Assam Police agression into the duty campsof CRPF and Mizoram Police near Vairengte autorickshaw stand."

The Home Minister also expressed his wish for a peaceful negotiation between the two states. According to the press statement, “The Government of Mizoram desires that the inter-state border issue with Assam be resolved in an atmosphere of peace and understanding.” The Home Minister of Mizoram also urged “the State of Assam to create congenial environment for peaceful resolution of the dispute” and strongly condemned “the unjustified act of the Government of Assam in this intrusion and aggression into the territory of Mizoram.”

The Assam government also issued a press statement consisting of eight points on 26 July, 2021 where the violent clash at Vairengte has been stated as a move against “breach of existing agreements and the existing status quo.” Though Assam expressed similar wish to maintain “cordial relations and peace”, in an official tweet and statement to the press at Silchar circuit house on Tuesday, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma added that 4000 commandos would be deployed at the Assam- Mizoram border and promised 1 month extra salary for police personnels posted in the border. The official press statement made by Assam CM points towards further violent attack towards the neighbouring state which signifies that Assam may not settle for peaceful resolution towards the border conflict.
