After careful consideration and pushback from several NGOs, Mizoram Govt has withdrawn the Tender invitation published earlier this month, for the construction of LGBTQI shelter at Sakawrtuichhun, effectively scrapping all plans for construction.

The construction of the LGBTQI shelter was prosposed by the Core Group on LGBTI issues under National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and comes under a request from the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) that every state should have a drop-in centre for the LGBTQI community, intended to serve as a safe space for rehabilitation and counselling.

The project had already been approved by the state government in May under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NLUM) with an estimated expenditure of ₹40 lakhs, funded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
