Dr. Pachuau Lalmalsawma, State Nodal Officer, IDSP, Official Spokesperson on Covid-19 announced that the samples sent from Mizoram for Genome Sequencing shows the presence of the new Omicron variant. 122 sample test results have been sent back to Mizoram out of which 62 samples from Aizawl District were confirmed with the Omicron variant. However, the new variant was not detected in samples sent from Khawzawl, Kolasib, Saitual and Serchhip Distcrict. The Delta variant was detected in 12 samples and the Delta Sub- Variant in 18 other samples.
The presence of the Omicron variant in the state has already been a long- standing speculation among the public. However, the medical authorities could make the official announcement only after confirmation of the samples sent from Mizoram for Genome Sequencing to West Bengal.
