Abu Ahmed Majumdar, a smuggler wanted by Silchar Police for his involvement in the smuggling of Areca nut is listed among the rice suppliers in Mizoram through Zoram Industrial Development Corporation Limited(ZIDCO).

The issue was brought to light during the proceedings of the Assembly session when K. Lalzirliana, Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs responded to the queries of Mr. Zodintluanga Ralte, MLA of Thorang Constituency in writing , stating that there are currently eight rice suppliers through ZIDCO under the MNF Government, among which the name Ahbub Ahmed Mazumdar came up and was listed as M/S Agri Fresh Trading Co, Silchar.

After what transpired last year on July 26th between Assam and Mizoram due to the inter-state border dispute, Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma,Chief Minister of Assam and Mr. Zoramthanga, Chief Minister of Mizoram met over dinner in New Delhi for the first time. According to reports of Barak Bulletin, the hyperlocal news publication reported that during this meet-up, the suspected Ahbub Ahmed Majumdar was present as a supporter of Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga.

In response to this, Mizoram Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) issued an official explanation that the dinner was organised by the Chief Minister of Assam. Upon the invitation of the Assam Chief Minister, the dinner took place at Assam House in New Delhi. On this occasion, the Chief Minister Zoramthanga was accompanied by Resident Commissioner of Delhi Mizoram House, Officer on Special Duty to CM and the Additional Private Secretary to CM and no one else.

According to the CMO, “The news regarding the Chief Minister inviting Ahbub Ahmed Mazumdar are just baseless rumours. It is presumed that he was present upon the invitations of the Chief Minister of Assam”.

The General Headquarters of the Mizoram National Front also made a statement on the accusations that the suspected Ahub Ahmed Majumber presented as the supporter of Mizoram Chief Minister was inadequate news. They have also stated that the Assam Chief Minister has invited Atul Bora and Ahbub Ahmed Majumdar as his supporters. They stated that “Mr Ahbub Majumdar set foot to New Delhi before the Assam Chief Minister and met the Chief Minister of Mizoram and his supporters at Mizoram House and they further requested him to lodge at Assam House and the two advocates lodged in Assam House”.

However, on the report of the Mizoram BJP on February 9, 2021, they have made contact with the office of the Chief Minister of Assam and Mr. Jyanta Malla Barua, MLA, Secretary to CM on February 9th, 2022. The office informed the Mizoram BJP that “Ahbub Majumdar was not a part of the Assam Chief Minister’s team at the meeting and the dinner, but came as a supporter of the Chief Minister of Mizoram as shown in the photos” . They also added that the Assam government is conducting a search operation on Abu Majumdar for smuggling areca nuts from Mizoram to Assam.

The name of Abu Mazumdar was listed in the state's rice suppliers list under ZIDCO along with 7 other individuals.
